We are Virmalised (pronounced VEER-mah-lis-ed), an Estonian folk dancing group with dancers from Sydney and surrounds. Our name “Virmalised” translates to “Northern Lights” and represents our Estonian roots in the Northern Hemisphere as well as the extraordinary visual spectacle the aurora borealis displays as it dances across the night sky. We perform both traditional and contemporary Estonian dances, wearing Estonian national folk costumes, which are strikingly colourful and vary depending on the region and period in history from which they originate. The foundation for Virmalised was laid in folk dance performances dating back 90 years to 1934, a heritage that we proudly continue today.
